"Journalists Have Families Too!": Revised

A definition of community involves a group of people who all share a common trait. It may be their race, religion, interests, or anything of the sort. Communities are supposed to make the people that are apart of them feel connected and wanted. For me, my community is journalism. It is my strongest central community because in journalism everyone must contribute a piece of themselves in order to create a greater whole . If someone slacks off, or doesn't do their job, then the entire paper could be a wreck. Especially for the people with the most impacting jobs, such as the section editors and editors’ in-chief.

Journalism works like a family. There is someone to provide income for the family, someone to run the house in order to make living smooth, and then the children, who basically need to be instructed what to do in order to accomplish something.The "children" of the family are the reporters of the newspaper. They are given the assignments, and then they come back with an article. The family members that provide the income are the section editors. They take the articles from the "children" and work it into the paper; sometimes needing to work tediously extended hours to bring home a paycheck, or on a journalistic viewpoint, a newspaper. Editors in-chief are like the behind-the-scenes family members. At first it may seem like they're not doing a substantial amount to contribute, but they are truly running the show. Without all of the members of the family, everything would be complete and utter chaos, and not everything would be done properly. My collage relates to my community because it displays a part of how everyone contributed to make this paper. We couldn't have done it alone, but when we focus and put our minds together, we can come up with something brilliant.

I think my fellow classmates realized this from the comments that they left about my collage. One fellow student commented, "I definitely get an easily understood sense that your community is journalism."Another wrote, "Your community is clear, and shows how you are connected."I believe that these quotes, along with my collage, display my definition of community in a way that shows I am connected.

Although I must say that in journalism, sometimes the people you work with put you on the verge of tearing all your hair out and collapsing into a nervous breakdown (especially the night before a deadline), you still love them and need them all the same, just as you would with a family. This is why journalism is my community, and hopefully it will stay that way for quite some time.
